What does a backflow assembly do?
Backflow is the reversal of water flow through pipes due to siphonage or back pressure. If backflow occurs in your irrigation system, it can cause water contaminated with chemicals or even animal wastes to be suctioned backwards into your drinking water. A Backflow Prevention Assembly is a mechanical valve that is designed to prevent possibly contaminated water from backflowing into the public water supply.

Why does a backflow prevention assembly need to be tested?
According to Washington Administrative Code (WAC 246-290-490), all irrigation systems connected to the public drinking water supply must be equipped with a backflow prevention assembly. This device* must be tested annually by a State-certified Backflow Assembly Tester to verify that it is operating properly.
*Except in the case of Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker valves.
